Nestled in between Breckenridge and Mount Quandary is a great hike in the Colorado Mountains. Colorado has a dearth of water, so any hike with a river and a lake is going to be popular pretty quickly. Fortunately, we drove 2 cars. When we got to the area, we all piled in Mike’s car and 4-wheeled up to the start of the trail. We passed hoards of hot, smelly people making the trek up the crazy 4-wheel drive road. Sorry Subaru outback owners, you don’t have a real Colorado car. The trail was beautiful and when you don’t have to hike up the road, it's just better. We set off at a silly pace because all of our kids are athletic and found the first lake rather quickly. It turned out not to be the first lake, but just a little pond. The second lake, took a little longer and was really quite steep. Madeline did great in the backpack and when we finally sat down to eat lunch, the sky was blue, the day was perfect, and the cheese and crackers and grapes delightful. I often wonder why we don’t spend all our time doing great things like this….oh yeah, work and school. We played in the stream a little and then hiked up to the second lake, which was so cool. We played in the lake and then hiked above it to the cliffs off trail and the view was pretty great. Certainly, this was a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. We hiked down and got back in Mike’s truck. We were so glad to not have to hike down the road. Madeline really enjoyed the off road…bumpity bump! We went into downtown Breckenridge and got some ice cream (so good…especially the peach/blueberry). It was the perfect day in a wonderful place.
